How to optimise Google Places
Hi,
I have decided to add the keywords ‘Maryborough accommodation’ alongside my business name in my listing on Google Places as suggested in the tutorial ‘Setting up and optimising Google Places’.
I used to be found in 11th position (ranked as K) on Google Maps when searching with either ‘Accommodation Maryborough’ or ‘Maryborough accommodation’. Now that I have added ‘Maryborough accommodation’ next to my business name I seem to have disappeared of the Google radar when typing ‘Accommodation Maryborough’. Would this have anything to do with the added keywords?
Would you recommend deleting these to be found with either ‘Accommodation Mayborough’ or ‘Maryborough accommodation’ again? Any suggestions welcome! Thanks. Cecile.

Hi Cecile,
Well done with adding your picture!
Right, I think when you are talking about the positions you are talking about the Google Maps and not Google “everything” listing – I am saying this as there is no M in the “everything” listing but it stops at J (unless you click on the more and then it takes you to Google Maps).
The objective is to appear in Google “everything” as high as possible so preferably in position A instead of M. I notice you appear in position B on Google “everything” for “maryborough accommodation qld” which is good but here we are striving to get you to appear on position A-J for “accommodation maryborough” as it has more searches according to the Google AdWords keyword tool.
What I recommend you do is call it “eco Queenslander – Accommodation Maryborough” and you might need to modify the first category. I have compared the listings ranking on A-J and they seem to have a different category than yours. I would need to log into your Google Account to see what your category is. Feel free to email me (first name @ untanglemyweb.com) your logins and I will take a look!
Almost there now!

LikeHello Cecile,
I just wanted to provide you with an update on Local Search. If you read Sara (our Search engine optimiser) blogpost here: http://www.mywebschool.com/Blog/ID/…cal-Search you will see what has changed very recently!
Cheers

LikeHi Cecile,
Thanks for the post!
You are correct, in the Setting up and optimising Google Places tutorial we mention adding the location keywords such as “location + industry type” next to your business name. This is a practice that isn’t recommended by Google (if you read the David Mihm Search Engine Ranking factors blog article also referenced in MyWebSchool.com) however it still seems to work and has been working quite well over the past 6 months (in Australia that is).
You mentioned disappearing from the Google radar, do you mean from Google Places, is this correct (the map)?
I have checked your Google Places listing and it currently doesn’t have Maryborough Accommodation in its title. Did you remove it since your post yesterday? (http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=e…0CBYQ_AU).
If you would like to try and add it again I would also recommend adding the keywords in the description which I cannot see at the moment. With regards to categories you have done the right thing it seems.
Finally, it takes approx 1-2h for the changes to reflect in Google Places so it isn’t instant.
If you provide me with a little more information I would be happy to look into it further for you. Just post back in the forum.
Cheers

LikeThank you for your reply Fabie.
Yes I removed ‘Maryborough Accommodation’ from the title soon after the post yesterday as I remembered that it was mentioned that Google does not see this as good practice. I have put everything back the way it was before the post for you to have a look at. You can go and have a look now, it has already taken effect.
I have also replaced the words ‘holiday house’ by ‘accommodation’ in the description but I am still not coming up in Google Places when typing ‘accommodation, maryborough, qld’ or ‘maryborough,
accommodation, qld’. I used to be in the K position. Has Google put me in quarantine or something? I only appear as a little dot on the map. I look forward to your reply.
Many thanks.
Cécile.

LikeHello again Cecile.
You mentioned you removed the Maryborough Accommodation soon after, what I believe happened is that you didn’t leave it long enough for the changes to take into effect.
You also mentioned you used to be in position K but there is no position K on the map (there are a max of 10 listings and K is the 11th letter of the alphabet) so I am a little puzzled about this.
What I recommend you try is to write Eco Queenslander – Maryborough Accommodation in the title (I can see that you have done it) ensure you have accommodation in your category (the first one), in your description and that your listing is 100% complete. We have been very successful with this method and our existing local search clients.
Let us know how you go otherwise we will look into it further.

LikeMany thanks Fabie.
The first time I added ‘Maryborough accommodation’ after the business name, I moved from position M to position K in no time when typing ‘Accommodation, Maryborough, Qld’ in Google. I was happy about that! It stayed like that for about three weeks.
I got a few reviews during the past three weeks so monitored the ranking very closely. It is only yesterday that the ranking stopped at the letter J and that we disappeared off Google Places when typing ‘Accommodation, Maryborough, Qld’ in Google. When typing ‘Maryborough, Accommodation, Qld’ though (notice the word order is different), Eco Queenslander comes as letter C and the list goes as far as letter T.
I will do the other changes you recommend. Thank you for all of this and take care. Cecile.

LikeHi Fabie,
Yes! That’s what I meant! Thank you for translating my post into good Google English for the Forum!!
I have just changed the title to “Eco Queenslander – Accommodation Maryborough” and emailed you my Google Account logins. I would love to see Eco Queenslander in the Google ‘everything’ when searching for ‘Accommodation Maryborough’… Cheers, Cécile.

LikeHi Cecile,
Thanks for forwarding these details. I had a look and this is what I did:
– Completed your listing by adding a video to make it 100% complete (was sitting at 94%)
– Changed a few categories
– Assessed your categories against the current listing rankings well for Accommodation Maryborough.
What I noticed is missing in your listing is:
– Reviews from TripAdvisor
– Citations (links from trusted local directories for example).
If you refer to the tutorial could you please follow the steps to implement this? Let us know approx one week after this has been done and we can reassess your position!
Cheers, Fabie
