Hi Kelly,
If you look at this link you will see that there is already a place page for MECC that people have been checking in to (link: http://www.facebook.com/pages/MECC/146921445352107). So the viewers of this place see your page information you need to click on the “Is this your business?” link in the left hand side bar. Once you click on this you can simply follow the process to claim the place as your own (make sure you are logged in with an account that is also the administrator for the MECC business page). From here you can also merge the place page to your business page so it becomes one and you can achieve the final result you are looking for in your question.
