My web developer said I don’t need Google Anaytics?
I asked my web developer for access to my web site to add Goggle Analytic’s and he wouldn’t give it too me then said I didn’t need it because I already have another stats program called Webalizer. Is this correct? Thanks Matt
Hi Matt
An older stats program like Webalizer tells you things like: hits; visits; referrers; the visitors’ countries; and the amount of data downloaded but uses the web servers logs to track ‘hits’ which also includes the search spiders that crawl your website. This means your numbers are going to be much higher than your actual unique visitors. There is also a raft of other limitations such as there is also no integration for Google AdWords tracking and easy to use scheduled reporting so that you can make informed decisions on where to spend your online marketing dollars. Webalizer is fine for general trends (albeit much harder to read), but for most of us, Google Analytics is the solution to pick. It’s comprehensive, easy to use, and it’s free.
What is more concerning is that your website developer won’t provide you access to your website. We come across this frequently and regardless of whether you set-up Google Analytics or not we would recommend you ensure you have the full login details for your website FTP or content management system and more importantly your domain name registration login details.
There are a few web developers that refuse to provide the login information for websites and domains their clients have paid for. Generally they are worried about losing business and use excuses such as you will break the site. We strongly suggest you ask for this information upfront so you can test the relationship before you get in too deep and risk putting your future online marketing initiatives and business at risk. To build a reputation around a domain name that you may not own or have access to is very risky and only takes one email to sort out.
Hope this helps
Adam
